It wasn't written for another holiday at all. The author John Pierpont wrote a book called "Airs of Palestine and Other Poems" and JINGLE BELLS (One Horse Open Sleigh...title in book) is in it. I own a copy that I bought at Barnes and Nobles and in the book it has a article on the author and how he came about writing the poem Jingle Bells, never once does he say anything about another holiday but said that a minister in his grandmother's church looked at his book and a few days before Thanksgiving was sung from the chior for the church's banquet with his permission...this is how people believe it was made for another holiday..........hope this helped. Best Wishes and Happy Holidays

James Lord Pierpont (1822-1893) wrote the song in 1857. The said song was meant for a Thanksgiving program at a church in Savannah, Georgia where Pierpont was organist. The song was so well accepted that it was again sung on Christmas day and since then became one of the most popular Christmas carols.

It's said that it was first written for Thanksgiving and was then called "One horse open sleigh" but because it was so popular it was then sung at Christmas and was eventually known as "Jingle Bells". Don't tell your teacher I helped you! Hope you get the extra credit.
