My 90 year-old mother-in-law experienced OCD for years. Now......having been diagnosed with dementia, she no longer has the cognitive ability to perform or remember ritualistic behavior.
So...it seems that Alzheimer's (or a by-product of same) "trumps" OCD.
Thats' a helluva way to rid yourself of OCD though - it's really sad.
No offense.... I appreciate a good sense of humor, really, and the occasional "wisecrack" answer.... but when you have a loved one in this condition, it's not very funny - trust me.

Well, Obsessive Compulsive disorder is a completely different thing when you have Alzheimers- obviously. I am taking care of my elderly parents (80's) My mom has Alzheimers but she is not OCD. I really feel for you. I know how difficult Alzheimers is and how painful it is to see the ones you love degenerate. I don't know, unfortunately, what would be the diagnosis if the person had both! That would be highly difficult! Good luck to you. I am going through hell.

Well, it would depend on the type and stage of alzhemiers whether it effected thier brain and memory consistantly enough to stop them from feeling the impulses to do thier ocd rituals. But likely it wouldnt, at least not all the time, as the brain chemistry causing the ocd would still be faulty. but for some, longer compulsions, memory would play a role and may cause even more distress than either of the conditions alone would.

You become paranoid, literally about everything. My father has both and it is tragically a situation where one has to have some control of the surroundings or else that individual will do major harm. Seek help before it is too late, and if you think I'm kidding, that's too bad because it does happen!

You repeat your "Ritual" ten times as much because you keep forgetting that you have all ready done it.
