There really is no "set" or "default" accent that is considered average or normal for people. Everyone will have different pitches in their tones, a slightly different way of pronouncing letters or words, etc. I'm not sure who got the idea thinking that there is a "right" way to speak.
Think about it; for example - if you were born as a Jamaican and lived in the Jamaican area for most of your life and then go to the United States or England or any other country as such -- you'd probably consider their "accent" to be weird or abnormal.
I don't consider myself, or anyone else around me for that matter, to have a "different" accent. It's just the way we speak and the way it has been passed down through the generations.

Where should I start?
I am Italian, but lived between France, UK and Austria in the past 12 years, and I am now in US (hopefully) for good. So, when I speak Italian, people ask me where I am from and are surprised I can speak their (and my!) language... When I am in France and Austria and speak their language, they have problems in figuring what else is in there. But the funniest is when I am in UK or here in US as they try really hard to guess with no success... I have heard that my accent sounds: Dutch, Irish/Scottish, French, German, Indian (!) and Welsh.... Nobody ever guessed I am Italian!!

Not to anyone in the USA but if I were to travel to another country...they'd notice my American accent I am sure. Even if I was using my 4 years of Spanish...I am sure they could tell.
