A 3-way bulb has two different filaments in it. An example would be one that has a fifty watt filament and a hundred watt filament. The special 3-way socket with two bottom contacts, lets you turn on 50, 100, or both at the same time for 150. If you put it in a regular socket, which has a single contact on the bottom, only one of those filaments will turn on. In this example it will be the 100 watt filament since it is the one connected to that single center contact.

You can use a CFL in a 3 way socket. On mine the first two clicks are on and the second two are off. If the bulb doesn't fit, you can get a bulb extended at Amazon for a few dollars.

"Rich Z" answered correctly, however, you can connect the two bottom contacts together, say by dumping some melted solder between them, or dropping a quarter into the socket, to get both elements to light up at once, giving you maximum light.

yes it will work but only on the "medium" amount of light, you can't change it from low to medium to high. it takes a three way switch to change the three way light amount.
