If you're talking about a gas oven on a normal gas range, NO, you can't lite it by hand with a gas butane match or any other source of a flame. Oven burners are fed by a safety valve in the back of the oven which is activated by a certain flow of electrical current that comes through the glo igniter when it gets heated up properly. No igniter, no light. You'll need to get a tech out to replace the igniter before you make any pizza I'm afraid, or buy one of those electric pizza ovens that sets on the counter top.

After you have blown the house up with your ball of flame call 911. First of all never light gas with a match unless you like burnt eye brows. Have a reputable HAVC lic. repair man out. Save a life it could be yours

I use a long thin peice of wood (about 20 inches). I light it, then I turn the gas on, and it ignites. Turn the gas on low, and you will be fine.
