It was in Mississippi at the casino. I'm currently is Los Angeles working for a world-wide computer firm. The agency that hired me did a background check 10-years back, it was good. This company wants to hire me but the want to know if I EVER had a felony conviction. I didn't lie on the app. do you think I can stay on the job that I've been doing for 8 months. My manager does like my work. What do you think? Can she make a difference in the decision?

More and more records that used to exist only on paper are getting put into computer databases and showing up in checks years after the event.

Most employers will not worry too much about a single conviction from 12 years ago - but they WILL worry about an employee who lies on an application.

Advice rule #1.... Disclose, disclose, disclose!

If you tell your current employer what happened, after 12 years the chances are it won't affect his decision anything like as much as how good a job you're doing now. If you DON'T tell him, and he finds out anyway....... bye-bye!

You have been there 8 months right? Even if you were a new hire the answer is the same. It was 12 years ago so you tell them NOW upfront and odds are all will be well.

If they find out later that will be that and you will have to explain later why you got fired to the next employer. You could move up to a higher position later (or decide to move or work on a project temporarily overseas) and the company may dig deeper. Or it could become a clearance or visa issue. You wouldn't want to work your way up and deal w. this 10 years from now.

So best tell them now and get it over with and then you can deal w. whatever happens.
