Should Massachusetts Ban Spanking?

Mass legislators are considering banning spanking. What do you think? Should they? Is it a good or bad idea?

What other implications are there if this goes through?

Raybdog - The main issue with this bill is that it would ban ALL spanking, including in your home. My main issue is that the state is trying to gain access to controlling how I discipline my children. For the record, I have 2 daughters, ages 18 and 14. I've spanked each one maybe once in their entire lives each. Though the spanking between 2 consenting adults... not so bad LOL.

I feel personally that spanking should ONLY be used as a last resort, after other alternatives have been tried to no avail. The reference that there are many in prisons that were spanked is, in a way, not a completely valid test in that in the past, a majority of children were spanked. I was, you probably were, and most of the average kids were.

When I was a kid, when visiting my aunt and uncles home, where there were 3 boys, we would usually start acting up at some point. All my uncle would do is walk over to the livingroom closet, open the door and we would instantly stop in our tracks. Why? Because we knew that, though he had never used it, that he was very capable and would be very willing to use that 7 layer razor strap hanging inside the door. If this law passes, similar intimidation that many of us "older folk" were under will be gone. Many kids today are out of control enough without this law, imagine how bad it will be if it passes.

I know from my own experience that time-outs and other alternative methods often don't work, while mild spanking does work with many children and can even save lives in some circumstances. Have you ever had to suddenly grab a two year old who almost ran into the street where she would have been struck and killed? The smack on the butt really helps them to remember for the next time.

While I'm opposed to striking children as a teaching method, I'm also opposed to banning things.

Education is a much better approach to teaching people WHY hitting kids causes more problems than it cures. And that's even in view of the people who insist that "I'm okay, and my parents hit me!" There are also thousands of people sitting in prison who's parents hit them too, but it's uncommon for them to join in the discussion.

Of course, if Massachusetts wants to impose public spanking on the parents who violate the law, that might be worthwhile! :-)

Its a bad idea to a point. kids need disipline but there is a difference between spanking and beating and some parents dont understand that
