(pssst: John figured these events would happen sometime in his lifetime!)
How about this classy guy?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Miller_%28preacher%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Disappointment
This guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hagee Taught that the world would come to an end on January 1, 2000 A.D, and he is STILL a filthy rich and influential preacher, still telling his flock that the rapture could happen any second now.
You might not ever heard of a man named David Hume, but he is a heavy hitter in the field of philosophy. He taught that induction is flawed. Induction is the act of saying "The sun has risen in the East and set in the West for every day that I have been alive. Therefore, the sun will always rise in the East and set in the West". The problem, of course, is that there really is no way of knowing that it will happen until it, well, happens. Maybe in a few seconds the sky will turn hot pink. You never know what will happen in the next few seconds!
The point is, my dear, you shouldn't fret over such things. The end will come when it will come, and if you are a religious person, it should be a non-issue. You should be living everyday virtuous enough that at any moment, you could be judged. Even us Atheists believe that true virtue is always doing the right thing, because it is the right thing, even when no one is looking. Death is a natural part of life, it will happen sooner or later, we must not be afraid of it, we must accept that it will happen and try to make the most out of every second that we are alive.

The future is not written in the stone.
There are several possibilities to the hypothesis of the world's end in some beliefs because the way how they interpret the sacred norms in their cultures. With that being said, did you know that a long time ago, several people believed that the dreams were messages from the gods telling them what will happen and to this day, we know that the dreams are just reflections of our memories. So, there is a possibility that some Aztec people believed that the world was ending in their dream in the way how they see it. However, it is not possible to base the world's end solely on their dreams without any physical evidence that indicates the belief was true.
With that being said, your friends have no evidence to support the statement of the world's ending because it's good as anyone's guess including Aztecs. You don't have to worry about it. Live your life to the fullest in the way you want to live for.

According to Mayan calendar it is true. The other strong fact is that the oil supply will be exosted by 2012 and it is already too late to look for alternative source. We might see a lot of riots over gas and someone might press the button. It's not the explosion that will end us but the dust that will block the sun. It will create nuclear winter and we will perish. Other things that are against us is a huge asteroid that will supposedly hit us in 2012. Add global warming and Nostradamus to it. The chances are pretty high. But who knows.

It's because the Mayan calander only goes to 2012. We can't even predict the weather, let alone the end of the world. If you worried about everything that could go wrong in the world you'd end up a basket case. Relax! Enjoy Christmas!

The world will end for lots of people in 2012, the world ended for lots of people today. Your world will only end in 2012 if you let it.

The world is very old and will continue long into the future, so be not afraid. 2012 is pointing to a great shift in the "Consciousness" of man. A Golden Age of Brotherhood. Peace is not "outside" of you, as well as war. Be ready to expand with the Awareness , for it will not be limited!

I remember watch a T.V program back in like 1998 or so saying the world will end in 2004. I wouldn't worry to much about it.

In my lifetime, it has been said at least 4 different times that the "world" was going to come to an end. People went crazy about it. As far as I know, it hasn't happened at any of those times and I highly doubt this time will be any different.

No. False. It will go on far later than 2080 or until Social Security (the US's pension system) gives out.
