Two terms or no more than ten years. If a Vice-President comes to the Presidency with less than two years in that term, he, or she, is eligible to serve two full terms after that.

Constitutional Amendment 22 adopted in 1951.

Not necessacraly there is a way a president can do 10 years. The 22 admendment convers this. If a president dies at some point in his term. The vice president becomes president. suppose the new president finished the old presidnents last two years. then the president can run for his full two four year terms which makes 10 years which is the maximum that any president can be in charge for as of the 22 admendment being past.

10 years is the max a president can serve. If the President dies and they're the VP, they can take over. As long as that period is less than 2 years, they can be elected twice on their own as well. (2 - 4year terms). So in total, a person can serve 10 years.

Not exactly. A person could serve longer under certain circumstances as the 22nd amendment limits to two elections: http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.amendmentxxii.html

So, a person could be vice president. For one reason or another they could assume the office of president with less than 2 years remaining on the term. They could then be elected for two terms as president and serve up to 10 years.

Also, the constitution does not specifically prohibit a past president from being vice president. They could potentially take the office of president.

Had Lydon B Johnson won the election in 1968, he would have served 9 years as president: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_johnson
