Well it depends on the number of players and the level of game you want to play. Perikles is a good game of politics and warfare set in Ancient Greece which is easy to play and can be found (if you are lucky) for £10 in TK Maxx at the mo.

Other games i would recommend are:
Colossal Arena http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/105 Fury of Dracula http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/20963
Bang! http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3955
Ra http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/12
Vinci http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/60
I would say a complete no to games like Monopoly and Risk - there's more to games than them.

Some different ones are:
Card related:
Sequence (matching cards on a board trying to make row before your opponent does)
Rummikub (like rummy but with tiles)
Kings in the Corner (cards)
Skip Bo
Phase 10
Cribbage (may be a bit challenging)
OK, for a fun catch game, that is fast-paced and can be used for up to 6 people:
Cosmic Catch (it is an electronic talking ball (from Nerf). Target has it for under $20, but that might be a little pricey.

It's like the opposite of Clue. I think it would be okay for an 11 year old, because it's humorous, but it's up to you. That company has lots of cheap board games that are imaginative.
