Tower City Center is very safe and downtown is very safe during the day and relatively safe at night, as long as you use proper precautions and aren't intoxicated. You should be fine at night in the Warehouse District and other areas immediately adjacent to the Renaissance Hotel.
Personally, I would think twice about walking from Playhouse Square to the Renaissance Hotel at night, but I'd probably do it rather than take a cab (it's a moderately long walk, and I might not do it depending upon the person I was with; normally I would drive it). I would not take the rapid from downtown to University Circle at night, although I know persons who do it (I don't like the safety of that particular station at night or the walk in the immediate area). It's not a bad idea, as in any big city, to check with the hotel concierge about the relative safety of walking anywhere at night. Downtown might be relatively deserted depending on the particular night and what events are taking place downtown, especially at the sports venues.
If you're interested in saving money, taking the rapid from the airport to the Renaissance Hotel is a great idea, as long as you have a manageable amount of luggage and don't mind walking a little bit and navigating some escalators (which hopefully are working) with your luggage. Luggage shouldn't be an issue on the rapid except possibly going downtown during the morning rush hour, or heading to the airport during the evening rush hour.
The airport/downtown rapid is very safe.
A cab, of course, is easier and perhaps faster. The rapid is very fast, especially in inclement weather, but it doesn't deliver you directly to the Renaissance front door.
A cab also is much more expensive. Taxi fare will cost over $40 with tips. The rapid fare is $1.75 (you need exact change). A compromise might be an airport shuttle (one possible service is linked below, but I would check with the Renaissance as it may have a special relationship with some service).

Tower City is one of the largest office/retail complexes in the nation. So make certain that you check with the Renaissance for directions from the rapid to the hotel (following are directions that seem accurate, but I haven't made the trek from the rapid to the Renaissance in many years):
<
When you reach the front of the Tower City complex, you’ll be in a large open foyer with a high vaulted ceiling and many brass-and-glass doors that open onto Public Square. Don’t go outdoors; instead, turn to your left and look for a large brass “Renaissance Cleveland Hotel” sign, over the entrance to a passageway. In the passage, walk past a little newsstand, go through a set of brass doors, and continue up a staircase into the lobby of the Renaissance. The Front Desk will be on your left.>>

The Renaissance is the most historical hotel in Cleveland and you should enjoy it. The hotel's Sans Souci restaurant is one of the best in Cleveland:

I'm from Cleveland and I like it a lot, so I'm a little biased, but I've also traveled a lot. Cleveland actually has a pretty nice downtown. It isn't huge, but there's stuff to do, and it's pretty clean. I always feel safe. Anywhere between W.9th and E.9th is safe to walk around. There is absolutely nothing to worry about during the day for sure. At night just be smart. And just ignore the panhandlers or tell them you don't have cash. They won't mug you.
I take RTA quite a bit, and the Red Line between the airport and downtown is great. Its a straight shot and definately the way to go. There will be a decent size crowd on the train, but you should have room for yourself and some luggage if you have it. The fare is only $1.75. Have exact change.
The Red Line goes right to Tower City in the heart of downtown on Public Square. When you exit Tower City onto Public Square, you'll find a taxi stand if you need a cab.

You will have no problem getting from airport to downtown.
Cleveland is MUCH SAFER that Detroit.
Just be smart and use caution as you would in any city.
After years of visiting downtown Cleveland I have never felt that I was in danger. Their are specific neighborhoods I would avoid, but downtown is pretty deserted late at night.

It's realtively safe, the city is undergoing a lot construction, it's almost like a ghost town after dark unless theres a game. As far as riding the RTA its pretty safe. You can ride the rapid straight from the airport to Tower City and arrive at the Renaissance hotel without going outside.

LOL! It's not the RTC it's the RTA! & not City Center it's Tower City! LOL! You can catch the RTA rapid train stait to the belly of Tower City, get off at Tower City and walk up the stairs and you will find yourself in a mall, but don't worry, because the Renaissance hotel is connected to Tower City and you don't even have to go outside to get to your hotel. You also won't have any problems getting to the Red line rapid in the airport, that is connected to the airport too.

Since you are a dude, you will be fine. It's creepy after dark, especially since not a whole lot of people go downtown anymore.
The RTA is fine, espeacially the rapids. The buses are dirty, but relatively safe.
