I would suggest the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.
The Lightning Thief
Sea of Monsters
Titan's Curse
I'd also suggest a great little book called
The Name of This Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch. You can read my review here:
http://blbooks.blogspot.com/2007/09/name-of-this-book-is-secret.html
I also would recommend the Shadow Children series by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Those are great, I read six of the seven within one weekend because I couldn't put them down. I believe the first one in the series is called Among the Hidden.
And I personally loved the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan STroud. Amulet of Samarkand is the first in that series. You can read my review here:

He might also enjoy The Society of Super Secret Heroes: The Great Cape Rescue by Phyllis Shalant.

ARAMINTA SPOOKIE by Angie Sage
Ages: 7-10
Have you ever thought, even for a second, about living in a haunted house? Well, it isn't necessary for Araminta Spookie to dream about such a thing --- because she already does! The enormous mansion where she resides with her aunt and uncle, along with a number of houseguests (both invited and uninvited!) is known as Spookie House. Bats rattle the rafters and ghosts float along the many tunnels and secret passages hidden under the house. And if Araminta's adventures in Spookie House are more hilarious than haunted, who cares? Even the grownups are having fun during Araminta's original and harebrained spooky schemes.

If he liked Amber Brown and Junie B. Jones, he'll love the Ramona books, the first one is Beezus and Ramona, by Beverly Cleary. He may also enjoy the Anastasia Krupnik series by Lois Lowry, and the related Sam books by the same author.
The Time Warp Trio books are fun as well, by Jon Scieszka.
You could also visit my website that recommends great books for 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

go to www.teenreader.com...this is a great site...it is partnered with www.bookreporter.com......when I need something to read, I go there....they have word of mouth, contests, reviews. I have won 6 books from them.....fun to come home from work and there is a book in the mail box. Check teenreader out with your child, I think it would be fun.
