Probaly not unless you plan on downloading lots of things...
Also the 40gb cant play ps2 games, so it all comes down to what you want.

If you're a very serious gamer, then No, 40GB for your PS3 will not be enough. I've had my 60GB PS3 for almost a year and I have 40GB left.

But there is one thing that you could do though, you could buy a bigger internal hard drive for your 40GB PS3 if you get one and take out the old hard drive.

Internal Hard drives for the PS3 don't even cost that much money, and you can buy any brand of internal hard drive, as long as it's a Sata 2.5" Laptop hard drive. The largest internal hard drive that you can put into a PS3 is a 250GB hard drive, and a hard drive of that size can be purchased for cheaper than the $179 hard drive that Microsoft sells for it's 360, and you will get way more hard drive space.

But the 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but if you don't care about playing PS2 games, then get the 40GB PS3 and buy a larger internal hard drive.

If you want to play both PS1 and PS2 games, get the 80GB PS3. I think that 80GB should be enough for you.
