Baseball is the top spectator sport, followed by football (soccer), with sumo some way behind.
For participation, exercising, aerobics, etc is tops.

Baseball-J league and international soccer interest a lot of Japanese people, but it's baseball that's #1. Besides JPB, there's MLB, high school baseball, college baseball and corporate baseball to keep busy with. Sumo is just not what it used to be with all the scandals and stupidity.

Baseball for older generation and soccer for young generation is the way I perceive it-- of course there will be exceptions but I feel like this is the way the society is moving.
Oh, and middle-aged women love soccer just because there are many cute soccer players.
