If you simply want to use the Internet, and not tranfer files between the computers, simply click on your wireless connections icon, click View Available Wireless Networks, select yours from the list, click Connect. If it is password protected, (encrypted, and it should be if it isn't) put the password in, put it in one more time, and click Connect again, and you will be connected and able to use the wireless connection.
Unless, your router uses a MAC address Allow list. If it does, you will need to do one of two things:
1. Disable the MAC address Allow list temporarily, while you use the laptop, or
2. Add your laptops MAC address to the routers Allow list.
To do the second, you need to access the laptops MAC address:
Click Start-Run, Or Open Accessories, then Command Prompt.
In the Run box, type cmd, and click OK or Enter, a command prompt will open.
In the Command Prompt window, type in ipconfig /all
There is a space between, "ipconfig" and "/all".
After the information finishes scrolling, look for the adapters name in the list and under that name it will say, Physical Address, and next to that will be a series of five groups , with two letters/numbers in each group. Like this:
11:57:m6:9Y:b2
Each MAC address is unique, not two are alike. This way you can control exactly who uses your wireless network connection.
If your router uses the MAC address Allow list, just add your laptops MAC--Media Access Control address, to the Allow list in the routers browser configuration pages.
It is also a very good idea to set an Administrator password for your routers configuration pages. This way only you can get into them and make changes.
If you wish to also browse files in another computer on the network and/or share printers, you need to setup File and Print Sharing on your network. It is simple, all you do is run the Network Setup Wizard on each computer.
To manually enable this, but it is better to use the Wizard, that way you don't forget a setting and the registry gets properly updated with the settings, do this:
In each computers network connections, click on Properties, then make sure there is a check mark in front of both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks boxes. If you do not see one or both of these items in the Properties Gereral tab, click on Install, then follow the prompts to install both of these components. It is very simple. However, it is still better to use the Network Setup Wizard, or its equilevent in Vista.
Good luck and much success with your router.
