"Canadians use marijuana at four times the world average, making Canada the leader of the industrialized world in cannabis consumption, a recent United Nations report found.
The 2007 World Drug Report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime says that 16.8 per cent of Canadians aged 15 to 64 smoked marijuana or used another cannabis product in 2006. The world average is 3.8 per cent."

The United States government once operated a medical marijuana program. They closed it down in 1992 thanks to Bush the first. There are still 7 patients on the program, receiving federal weed until they die, paid for by the taxpayers.
You cannot find a single case in any of the world's medical literature showing a death from overdose of marijuana.
Nine States have medical marijuana programs.
The single best drug known for settling the stomach is marijuana.
Marijuana has been shown to be quite non-addictive, much less than tobacco and even alcohol.
According to US govt. research 80 million Americans have smoked it at some time, 20 million in the past year, and 11 million use it regularly.

Cannabis was used in WW 2, the rope was used by the government on ships and where ever they could use it this material.
At one point and time Cannabis was very promising for American agriculture.
"Canvass was widely used as sails in the early shipping industry, as it was the only cloth which would not rot on contact with sea spray."
I put a couple links there for you to read over, history is something I love!!
As for the Canadian thing you hear, have no clue. Many strains of today (at least here on the west coast) came from Humboldt Country California
btw something my Mr. said to me when I asked him what was up with the number 7 on this kids pants. He said the letter 7 back in his day meant marijuana. Now I can not find anything to back this up though.....

There IS some truth in that - though Vancouver is FULL of potheads ;);););)
Edit: "a.fabella" is WRONG - it is NOT legal to smoke it here (especially NOT in public), but the laws for simple possession are very lax (and they have to be willing to ENFORCE them). Trafficking is STILL highly illegal though!!
Edit #2: Even in Amsterdam, it's illegal to smoke IN PUBLIC - the whole "coffee shop" thing is a CONTROLLED environment, where people can buy it to use THERE.

Contact a drug information center, they have loads of bumph that you can site for your essay. Side affects can be vastly increased chances of tumors, drug induced psychosis, paranoia.
There is a hospital in Melbourne or the eastern suburbs that have a room for patients with cancer to smoke it in, as it has fantastic pain relief properties.
