How many weeks are you? Do you know if baby is head down?

Sometimes when baby is large enough and you know it is head down, you can lie back and feel with your fingers, right above your pelvic bone but near to where the crease is where your legs meet torso, and you might find a hard, round skull if you press firmly. From there, feel both sides of your belly. Is one side firm, rounded, and smooth, while the other is softer and has more irregular bumps? The smooth round side is the baby's back (if the baby is facing towards your back), the irregular bumps are feet, arms, elbows, etc.

Here's how my midwife told me to intepret what I can feel outside my belly. While lying down you should be able to feel the baby's head right above your pelvic bone. It will be firm and hard. The small "bumps" you feel when pressing down are usually babies extremities (arms, etc.)

Feel for two main masses opposite each other - one will be the head, one will be the bum. Ask your doc to point them out to you next time...as you go, you'll be able to tell the difference.
