6x + x = 7x. Just think of the x as a 1 so it would be 6 + 1= 7- then add an x

6x + 1x = (6 + 1)x = 7x

that would be 7x. multiplication is simply the rapid summation of things, so 6x can be written as x+x+x+x+x+x, so adding one more makes it 7x.
