Definately on their back. Not the stomach, this is believed to be one of the causes of SIDS, do not let baby sleep on the tummy.

Putting a baby to sleep on their back is associated with deformational plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), motor skills delays at 6 months, social skills delays at 6 months, torticollis (tightening of neck muscles), shoulder retraction, Temperomandibular Jaw Disorder, increased episodes of sleep apnea (lack of oxygen), and neurocognitive delays. On the other hand, stomach sleep has none of those negative things and also helps prevent hip subluxation, increases sleep duration, lessens infant screaming episodes, and helps relieve colic. As for the SIDS statistics, they are misleading, overstated, and probably not even applicable to 99% of infants. Before 1993 over 70% of American babies slept on their stomachs, 13% slept on their backs and the rest slept on their sides. Since 1993 there has been a 500% increase in flat head syndrome and an increase in kids with developmental delays and disorders.

I think the stomach sleep position is much healther for a baby. If you do decide to sleep your baby on their stomach I'd let him first sleep on your chest for a little bit and see how he likes it. Good Luck.

Do whatever you want - right now they say back, but my daughter's head got flat so they said do side with a wedge. And now there's a big study for delayed crawling/rolling over because babies don't sleep on their tummies - who knows! If you do let your baby sleep on her stomach, make sure there is air ventilation, most SIDS cases are from babies breathing in their own carbon dioxide continually.

Seems like every year this changes. When I had my daughter it was putting them on their backs that causes SIDS. I never really followed what the nurses told me since my daughter would not sleep on her stomach (at that time you were supposed to make them sleep) she would only sleep on her back. I say don't worry too much what position the baby sleeps in, just go with the baby.

it is best to lay the baby from side to side. You are the one who molds your baby's head and when you just lay the baby on its back all the time the back of the would end up flat. so you can switch which way you lay the baby

There is a possibility of SIDS when a baby is on there stomach. My daughter has always slept on her back. Every now and then I put her on her side when she sleeps with me.

It's not that you'll kill your baby it's just that babies on their backs have a higher statistical rate of dying of SIDS. The best position is on its back or on its side using a wedge to hold the child in position. You should probably alternate positions between sides and back because there are concerns of "flat head".

"Back" to sleep.

But personally I let my kids choose and sometimes put them on their tummies then just kept my eye on them. When I couldn't keep an eye on them I put them on their backs. There is a great risk of SIDS on the tummy.

Most kids sleep heavier on their tummies. I mostly kept them on the side so if they spit up at all they won't choke or smother their faces. Like everyone else said, once they can roll they will choose for themselves.

The only time a baby goes one it's tummy is when it is supervised tummy time.

If they are on their tummies and not supervised the concern of SIDS rises.

Backs are the best. When a newborn though you can roll a towel and place it under one side just to help the baby cough out the mucous !

Always put a baby to sleep on their back. Once they are old enough they will roll over onto their stomach if they want to.
