Because the teddy bear is an inanimate object; this is considered an insult to the prophet.

FYI, even if the bear was real, the teacher would still be in trouble. Naming an animal after the prophet is also a no-no, since humans are higher in Allah's creation than animals. To name a lesser being after the prophet would be an insult.

I don't understand why people are saying its not the teachers fault.

The teacher is responsible for everything that happens in his/her class room. it doesn't matter who named the bear, she is responsible for it.

for example: Its like if a friend hides marijuana in your car. a cop then finds it in your car. you (the owner of the car) will be responsible for it, even if it wasn't your. it doesn't matter who's marijuana it was, it was in you car, so you are responsible for it.

Disgusting. I mean no insult to Islam but this woman came from her rich and educated country to one of the shitholiest of shitholes to provide education to kids who otherwise wouldn't have a hope in the world and she faces being beaten savagely for her good nature. That is absolutely disgusting, inflicting violence on a non-violent, good human being is the height of evil.

Anyone could have made the mistake she did, I certainly could of. i thought muhammed was a popular name amongst muslims, i wouldn't have thought anything of allowing the children to name a teddy bear muhammed. There are plenty of people named Muhammed going around mugging, killing and raping, why aren't they punished for blasphemy?

Edit:
Holy Crap Riley. Did you know about that particular law did you? Well you'd be one of a very small percentage. When somebody breaks a cultural taboo, it is rude, it's is not the sort of thing you should accept being savagely beaten for. Especially a fifty four year old woman who out of the goodness of her heart decided to go and help Sudanese children who otherwise wouldn't have a chance.

I can't even come close to berating you enough for comparing this teacher to Guy Fawkes who planted gunpowder under parliament. Guy Fawkes was a violent political activist intent on killing hundreds of people, not a middle aged schoolteacher who's crime was to make a bit of a faux pas. You're coldness and ignorance chills me, she shouldn't have to be strong enough because we should be pulling her out, I'm absolutely positive that if the offer of deportation was made, she'd do it gladly and unfortunately never make the mistake of trying to help others again.

The Brits should get her out of Sudan immediatly. She shouldn't have to go by their insane laws. She is a British citizen. It is just insane that she should be going through such an ordeal.

It's a case of being arrogant to obey the customs and culture of a country. She should have respected the country she was a visitor in to respect there customs and respect there very strict religious culture. If someone walked into your own house and they disrespected it you would become upset and angry when everyone else respected it. I do feel sorry for Gillian but she should have respected this, knowing the very strict rules to there customs. Plus she is a teacher so she can't use stupidity as a reason for her actions. There must have been other people disrespected this law they were also punished for it as well. In London Guy Fawkes had disrespected British laws and customs causing treason, he was executed for this and every November 5th this tradition is remembered with bonfires. Most countries take there culture and customs very seriously. Cruel as it sounds there is a saying what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. If Ms Gibbons did get excused or wasn't punished others would also disrespect this custom and this would destroy there traditional culture. All countries are proud of there traditional cultures and will never accept them being white anted or disrespected. Americans have no culture or traditions and as a visitor into another country they should all learn about them and respect them. This is why many people dislike Americans and find them all rude vile and arrogant also with them trying to white ant them by invading countries thinking everyone there thinks just like them well they don't. I just hope Gillian will be strong enough to accept her punishment for breaking a countries laws. As cruel as it sounds this is there punishment for blasphemy as in any Indonesian country being hanged or face a firing squad for drugs or being beheaded in Arabia for committing murder and being stoned to death for committing adultery in many other Islamic countries it's there laws and they all should be respected just as our laws. In Singapore people are caned for committing crimes as cruel as it sounds it's there laws and there punishment just as families have to pay for a bullet used to execute a family member in China for breaking there laws. Just as in the US lethal injection or the gas chamber is given. In some counties it is illegal to take pictures of government buildings and you can be arrested as a terrorist or being a spy. have a look at the link people should read this before entering another country. Even wearing a tee shirt in another country or wearing shorts is a criminal offense. This link is updated all the time.

It seems to be Sudan being petty. They want some stupidly little amount of "control" over Britain by sentancing one of their citizens over something incredibly trivial. Why don't they punish all those who name ANYTHING Mohammed in Sudan? What about all those parents who sully the name of the prophet by naming their distinctly normal children Mohammed?
