I'm in the market for a new router, apparently. What is the best kind? Screw Linksys. Netgear? D-Link? Other?

I prefer Belkin.

So, I take it you had a bad experiance with Linksys too? lol

My first router was Linksys, and while hooking it up I entered the security encryption wrong, it kicked me off the Internet and would not allow me back into the configuration pages. After spending hours searching for relative information at the support website, to no avail, I attempted to locate a phone number to technical assistance, also to no avail. Apparently, back then, '06, Linksys didn't support telephone technical support help. So, I tossed that and bought a Belkin.

Found out the problem was due to my ISP misconfuguring our connection back when we changed from dialup, to DSL, and we wanted to use wireless, (Linksys), and the connection people totally misconfigured the entire setup, leaving a mess for me to clean up. I couldn't use the CD that came with our Belkin router for its quick setup feature, and had to manually hook the computer into the modem, get a connection, then go into the configuration pages to manually setup the router. The technician messed up that configuration, and instead of listening to me, (I said to set the router back to factory specs) I spent two weeks on the phone with Belkin first tier technical support, finally got it upgraded to a third level tech, who told me to reset it to factory specs!

Whichever you choose, make sure you have a phone number for free technicall assistance, that all of your hardware devices you hook up is compatible with whichever type of encryption you wish to use, and all use the same speed adapter, or if you buy an 802.11n, but have any device which is 802.11b of g, your entire network reverts to the slowest speed adapter, and you wasted your money on the faster router.

Make sure you have a connection before setting the security features because if you don't, you will not be able to get back onto the browser configuration pages if you discover your connection was not properly configured, and you will need to start all over again from factory specs.

Just a few friendly tips for Christmas.
