In some adolescents there is the self doubt and a large feeling of inadequacy to face life;
Some will have been bullied already and backlash unexpectedly, some will feel vunerable through a lack of interlect or a lack of body parts-
-size of penis or breasts.
Some will have got involved in self abuse (recreational drugs) and shall have skitzafrenic life patterns in general.
Some have parents or teachers that aren't cutting the path before them which leaves the with a very frutrating dillema and sorry for the spelling

It really is hormones going awry. They're getting all their kinks worked out in their bodies as they mature, so hormones really are a huge guiding factor.

Another thing is that they are trying to find their identity and they want to fit in but still be their own person. They are also at an age where they want independence but they still have to rely on their parents (such as dates to the movies but they need their parents to give them a ride). Mix this with the hormones and the mood swings can be nightmares to their parents!

well, since you said other than hormonal fluctuation... and seeing as how I'm still at the age I can remember my adolescents but understand adults I would have to say an unjustified sense of "I'm right" derived from limited life experiences.

As they say, some people have to learn the hard way.
