I have a roommate with this EXACT same personality! The only thing I can do is to kill her with kindness and try to be overly positive when I am around her. I also come back with a positive spin on a negative comment she makes, it sort of throws her off and forces her to not be such a complete debbie downer while around me.

Talk to her. Try to figure out the reasons behind her negativity and depression. And maybe you can help improve her life and make her happier.
If that's too much trouble or you just don't care about her enough, avoid her.

you take her aside and compliment her - just like you did here. then you say something to the effect that she could be such a fabulous person if she didn't have such a negative attitude. if that doesn't work, avoid her if at all possible - no one needs more toxicity in their lives than we already deal with on a daily basis.

Why deal with her at all. Let her alone to her own devices. Too much negativity will bring you down and it's not worth it. She eventually will have to face up to her own problems and not make them yours.

My girlfriend's brother has the same case. He's 24, lazy, whiney, annoying, arrogant and a big ******. I'd love to land a punch on his face and a kick on his ribs some time >_>

give her a gun, and dare her to point it at herself and pull the trigger. Shes one of these people that insist since her life sucks, she can make everyone elses suck too. Honestly i distance myself from people like that, I have my own problems to worry about. And i deal with it fine.

just tell her to get off her *** and do something. sometimes its tough to tell the person flat out, but thats what you gotta do for their personal best. in the end they'll feel better about themselves and their lives. my best tip is to go for a short jog, it'll help get her brain working and make her feel better and healthier. she'll feel happier and so will you.
