Could I take the RAM from a windows 98 SE PC Net and install it on a 98 HP Pavilion? It only has like 64 Mb of RAM using just one slot, so could I put another stick in? Its RAM is most likely just single, old fashion style.

Would appreciate an answer by someone with knowledge of specific computer RAM designs.

Thanks

Memory comes in different sizes and speeds. For you to be able to move the memory from one PC to another, it has to 1) physical fit in the memory slots of the second computer and 2) be of a compatible speed with the original memory.

Easiest way to check is to take the memory out of the second computer, and look along the bottom where it plugs into the system board. There will be one or more "notches" in the memory. The slot will have "bumps" in it. If the notches and bumps line up, then physically the memory fits in the computer. If not, you can not use it.

Then compare the marks on the memory. As they are 98 PCs, they will probably have a "speed" on them somewhere such as P66, P100, or P133. If they are the same, then you can use them together.

If uncertain, add the memory and try to boot the computer. If it is the wrong memory, the computer will not even boot. It will "beep" at you, or not display anything on the screen. If that happens, remove the new memory. You will not harm the computer by trying to boot it with incompatible memory.

If it does boot, check the amount of memory listed under Windows (Control Panel, System Icon) and make sure that the added memory is displayed there. If it is, then you are good to go.

The first answerer was good but its too long.

This is what you do.
www.crucial.com
Run the scanner on both computers( i know the website is trying to sell RAM but the scanning tool is free)
The scanner will tell you what type of RAM you have and what slots are empty, if its the same type you can switch them. I am pretty sure you will figure out if they are same type just look at the name.
