There is something uncivilised about a middle-aged visiting teacher being lashed by Muslim fanatics.
But think about the other side of the situation. Imagine a Muslim woman teacher came to your rural, agricultural area (complete with burqa) and started teaching in your local church school. After a poll of pupils, she decides to name a teddy bear Jesus Christ. Or perhaps Mormon. Or Virgin Mary. Or Jehovah.
How well would that go down in that community, in their school? I suggest it may cause offence. Well, this teacher has been similarly unwise and ought to have known better at her age. But still whipping a mistaken middle-aged visiting teacher is uncivilised and if it reflects the spirit of Islam, then there is something wrong with that religion.

Update - her 7 year old pupil, called Mohammed, has spoken up for her. The teddy is named after him, not the prophet, so she is going to be released imminently
There are some scary things happen in some of these countries which the world as a whole needs to condemn.
The other day, it said on the news that a rape victim in Saudi was facing 200 lashes, because she had sat in a car with him when he wasn't related to him.
Slagging these cultures off isn't going to help anyone, put pressure on civilised governments (is that an oxymoron?) to do something about such things.
And well done for managing to get asylum seekers in there somewhere. At least it takes pressure of the Jews being blamed for everything!!!!!!!

This is stupid come on man I'm not that religious but i know that in Christianity naming a bear Jesus is not a crime this is just nonsense made by some mad religion freaks i would gladly let children name a teddy bear what ever they wanted because if children are named Muhammad so why not a teddy they are only 6 year olds whats the problem?

it has nothing to do with a teddy bear called Muhammad. It seems to be just an exuse for rascism against westerns,
If logic and brains were in play here then it should be the 6 years old child who should be blamed. Since it was hm and his class that named the bear. The parents are more to blame for not instilling a sense of religious dogma into their childre. They find the easy way and blame a western woman.
This incident has done nothing good for improving relationships between those who believe in Islam and others. Sudan peoople are looking pretty stupid and gullible at the moment and I am sure that is not the real case.

Personally, I think its all gone outta control. Read in the papers that ' a ' parent complained....actually it was a pupil who names the Teddy after him..i mean what nonsense, it's a name but wasnt in anyway meant as an insult to the Prophet (pbuh)...was an act of innocence....all children give teddys and dolls names, and this was no different.
As in that part of the world, they have Muslim names...it would look out of place to name the teddy a Tom,Dick or Harry as the children arent so accustomed to such names so off course they would use a name that they can relate to that part of the world.
I think the teacher is TOTALLY innocent through-out and the whole stupid episode should be just dropped and let her get on with her life. Also, such people ( Sudanese authority)should just learn to take things like this with a pinch of salt. It's something the school should have being able to deal with internally without making clowns of themselves worldwide.
It hasn't caused me offence by naming the Teddy Mohammed...sad to see political correctness has spread world-wide too.

I've been wondering, if these were Muslim children she was teaching, wouldn't they have known that naming the teddy bear "Muhammad" would be considered blasphemy? I have to wonder if this teacher wasn't "set up" if not by these kids then by their parents.

Even for Sudan, a non-secular military dictatorship, this is absolutely insane. If Muslims believe Muhammed's name is sacred that's their right, but don't punish others for not believing it. Same goes for the London rioters in 2005.
Marty this is not your country. All legal british citizens have a right to express their views about British law because, like it or not, we live in a representational democracy. That's a fact of life, because it's the law.

It wasn't the teacher who chose the name. It was her class of MUSLIM children.
One law for the kids another for the teacher.
Says alot doesn't it? The kids choose the name and she gets done for blasphemy.
Just what does that say in all truth about that particular religion. Waste of space. And it does not rate 40 anything never mind lashes.
