EXPERIMENT A

A selectively permeable membrane separates the solutions in the arms of the U-tube . the membrane is permeable to water and to substance A but not to substance B . forty grams of substance A and 20 g of substance B have been added to the water on the 2 of the U-tube. assume that after a period of time , the solutions on either side of the membrane have reached equilibrium.

1) How many grams of substance A will be in solution on side 1 of the U-tube ? How many grams of substance A will be in solution on the side 2 ? Explain .

2) How many grams of substance B will be in solution on side 1 of the U-tube ? How many grams of substance B will be in solution on the side 2 ? Explain .

3) What has happened to the water l;evel in the U- tube ? explain

I am assuming that these two substances do not react chemically with each other. Is that correct?

1) 20 grams of Substance A will be on each side, because the membrane is permeable to A and a chemical will always travel to an area of lesser concentration if possible. Substance A will be found in equal concentrations on both sides.
2) There will be 0 (zero) grams of Substance B on Side 1, because it cannot cross over the membrane. The original 20 grams of Substance B will remain in Side 2.
3) There will be a higher level in Side 2, because B does not cross over the membrane barrier, and the water and A need to remain in equal concentrations on both sides. Now, what is interesting about this situation is that we don't know the density of Substance B, but we are going to have to assume it is somewhat comparable to water. It is has the same density as water, 20 grams should displace 20 ml of water. If there is a larger or smaller amount of rise in the water level, you can measure the density of this Substance B.

1) Suppose A is added to side 1 and B is added to side 2. A and water can move freely across the membrane, but B stays on side 2. Side 2 has higher osmolarity, and so more water will be on side 2, and so side 2 has a larger volume. There will be less than 20 g of A on side 1, and there will be more than 20 g of A on side 2.

2) Zero gram of B will be on side 1, and all of B (20 g) will stay on side 2, because B cannot move across the membrane.

3) Side 2 will have a higher water level, because osmolarity in higher on side 2.
