I want to purchase a really nice watch for my father, that maybe one day could be passed down from generation to generations. I know that I don't have 10,000 dollars to spend on a Omega or similar high end models. Does anyone have any suggestions I am looking to spend around $500.00 for the watch and I like the watches that have leather bands rather than stainless steel. I would appreciate suggestions and advice if it is worth to get a automatic, quartz, etc.. I saw a watch on the Tourneau website by Raymond Weil that is their cheapest model lists for 395 on the site however this is a quartz watch..i'm not sure suggestions of brands and particular watches would be very helpful. Thanks

If you want a watch that could be passed on to generations later, the only choice you have is either an automatic watch or a manual wind watch. They can be repaired by a competent watch makers forever - by making parts by hand, if necessary.

Quartz watches are dead when the electronics die and replacements aren't available. It is NOT possible to hand repair quartz "movements."

I'm afraid, you won't find any quality Swiss made manual or automatic watch for 500 dollars. You are under budget by factor of TEN. You *may* be able to find mechanical watches on sale, but in your price range, it won't be a piece that is worth repairing by hand and/or passing it for generations.

My suggestion is, to stop thinking of passing it for generations and simply get him a nice watch. You could find Raymond Weil, Oris, Tag, Ebel, etc as they often go on sale for half price or lower (if you are patient). I'd look for quartz piece as it will significantly widen your options.

By the way, HAMILTON, which is an American brand, has a reputation among watch collectors as pieces that are unusually nice and well constructed for their price tag. You might include it in your search.

Skagens are very nice. Very simple, almost like a Movado. Speaking of Movado, I think the cheapest they run is around your price range. I am sorry but I do not know the names of the particular models. I particularly like automatic watches.
