i want to write poetry that will be able to give a message across easy...obviously i would use simple words but what else would make it simple but effective and engaging?

Cute & clever.

I saw a dog,
it slept like a log
in a bog...

is too cliche. Well, kind of. Anyways, it's stuff like that that's lame. Variety is key also. Yeah, keep things fairly simple, but switch it up a bit! Go into lots of description & colorful language...it'll brighten up any topic.

Simple words are good, but don't write down to children. They're young, but they're not stupid. Ronnie is right to recommend Mother Goose and Dr. Seuss as models you should read. Also look at work by A.A. Milne, Shel Silverstein, and Jack Prelutsky, among others.

Rhyme will make it more memorable and fun. Instead of preaching, you show by example. Study Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose.
