He wasn't sick yesterday but today his nose started getting runny and now it is just stuffed up. We breastfeed, so I'm hoping my milk has enough antibodies to lessen the severity of the cold. In the meantime, what medicine, if any, can I give him? He is 5 months old tomorrow. My doc isn't in and the message they have on their machine doesn't give me an on-call number....I'm not sure what to do. I want to relieve his stuffy nose so he can breath nurse.

Dolly, I'm sorry you're jealous. It's really sad you can't just be happy with your own life. Grow up and learn how to be a mother. Maybe you should be happy with the little girl you got. I got a boy, you didn't. Boo hoo you cry baby!
Get a life becuse you're seriously a no life loser.
Like someone told you before, TRASH BREEDS TRASH. Stop lying to yourself you dumb bitc*.
If you only realized how dumb people truly think you are. You put people down and you know why? Because you have a low self-esteem and I don't feel one bit of pity.

My daughter is 6 months and just got her first bad cold...first of all, get some of the "little noses" saline salution. The Dr. told me to squirt 2-4 drops in each nostril then suck it out with the bulb saringe. do it as often as needed. Also, get a cool mist humidifier in the room he sleeps in. It will losen the membranes and allow him to breathe easier. Also when your baby is sleeping put a pillow under the mattress so that he is on a bit of an incline and will open his nasal passages a lot more. If he is having trouble nursing, latch him on for a few seconds and then take him off so he gets a few good breaths in thru his mouth and then let him latch on again. But if you have already done the saline salution, he should be able to breathe thru a whole feeding. Good luck!!!

Sounds like teething could be the issue as well.

Get a humidifier in his room when he sleeps, rub a bit of vicks vapor rub on his chest and throat, keep him warm, and you might try some of that vapor bath stuff too.

Really there is nothing you can do but that stuff...the humidifier will help him sleep better and breath better.

OH YEAH - make sure its a cold humidifier, not a hot one - you don't need to add salt to it....and also put a phone book under the side of the mattress that his head is at to prop his upper body up a bit.

You can use several methods.

What I always did was make a saline solution (1/8 tsp salt dissolved in one cup of warm water) and then using the bulb syringe, squirt a little up both side of his nose. HE WILL HATE IT, but it does clear them out so they can nurse. Keep the water warm when you do it. Only do this if you need to nurse, and it usually lasts for a few feeds, so you may only have to do it twice a day.

Otherwise, you can run a shower and have him inside with you, you can use a humidifier, you can prop up his bed or let him sleep in his car seat.

You could call the emergency room and ask to talk to the doctor on call. They should be able to give you some advice without you having to come it. If it's just a runny nose and not a fever a warm bath might help loosen it, if he has a fever a bath might not be a good idea.

Cool mist humidifier/vaporizer, saline nose drops, wait a few minutes then suction out if necessary. Check temps. Could the stuffy & runny nose be from teething.

That's absolutely disgusting to squirt things up a baby's nose! As if he isn't uncomfortable enough as it is! Use Vicks or Olbas Oil on a tissue and hold it near his nose while he's feeding, he will naturally try hard to breath and thus breath it in to ease the congestion.

There is nothing you can really give a newborn but I got a really good humidifier and then rubbed some vapor stuff on the rim of it not a lot and put in his room to help him clear it up some and it helped.

You can try steaming up the bathroom or if you have a room Vaporise where you can plug in. I always found this method to work great and also eliminated the need for medicine to some degree. Good Luck - hope he gets better soon......

vaperizers are about 12 bucks, get one fill with water and a tablespoon salt, plug in. Helps alot for breathing, and helps them sleep. The vaporizer should be 4ft away from child. If you can't get one, run the shower and close door and sit with child in the room.

Try a nice warm bath with some eucalyptus in the water if he isnt allergic. Keep a bulb syringe handy.
