No I didn't wet the bed, not lately anyway.
I posted a question in the Military section, asking if the U.S. Army serves powdered potato's now-a-days, at regular mess hall meals. All the answers came back as yes they do. I was shocked; when I served my three years we got real spuds, mashed with lumps and all. I know they were real, because I spent many a KP hour involved in the great potato pealing process of the day. I'm sure that any old soldiers out there will be shocked to hear this.
And I said this would be moderatly interesting, and probably quite boring to most. Any old soldiers concerned about this?

Well I agree that I was shocked. I can't believe all bases adhere to the same standards. I will bet some branches still have real potatoes. After all, what's left for KP? If you can't peel potatoes, what can you do?:) Imagine KP duty and having to go the mess hall to drudgingly open up dehydrated potatoes. What a job!!!

I liked the story. Got any more? You would think that if someone was willing to serve their country, the least we could do was feed them real spuds! But with some of the other problems I guess instant mashed seems pretty tame. And don't worry about KP duty. Have you ever cleaned a bathroom with a tooth brush or marched in a big circle until your legs felt like they were falling off? It's been done!

Yes, I found it more than moderately interesting! 'Cause as a military brat I ate in many a mess hall..even lived in barracks/dorms in France when in high school and we ate what the Airmen/GI's ate...and we had REAL lumpy potatoes....I think whomever told you that was not realizing they still use real potatoes...or then, maybe they now use the instant variety...Shame if they do. I liked the taters! LOL
What I didn't like was the daily a.m. SOS...those of you ever exposed to the military know what that is.

I believe menu cards are a thing of the past. For example, when the Navy serves MEAT LOAF, it's in a hermetically sealed bag, which is cut open and dumped into a pan and stuck in the oven! Instant potatoes? Yup, and throw in a few handfuls of potato peelings to make the swab jockeys think it's REAL potatoes. Powered eggs? Throw in a few pieces of egg shells to fool them, too.
My favorite was HAM STEAKS. I'd ask the mess cook...whoops.. the FOOD SERVICE ATTENDANT, "Is that ham kosher?" One went and asked the cook and said, "He says not to worry, the ham IS kosher!"

I asked my Dad about the potatoes. He served in the Army in WW2. He said "in the beginning" they would bring 200 lbs of potatoes ( each day?) for the people working in the kitchen to fix.
By him saying "in the beginning" I asked if he meant that later on during the war, did they fix instant potatoes? Dad said "I don't know, that was 60 years ago."

Yes, but only moderately interesting, if it's too interesting i don't want to know.
That was moderately intresting, thank you. although I not overly concerned about this but I think they should be served the real deal, they deserve at the very least real potatoes.

I am not a soldier, however; i would hope they can have real potatoes. Maybe its not possible for all of them to have them though. GB and GL and I hope they get their SPUDSWORTH!

Sure I do ... I love learning new things, and generally it's the 'moderately interesting' stuff that is the most fun!
