Juan caught the fly ball?

A surge of power destroyed the pumps.

You just get rid of the 'to be' verb and replace it with the 'action verb', which is 'to destroy'.

Yes, your second one is correct. For the first one, you could say "A power surge caused the destruction of the pumps."
