My ex-g/f's dad still owes me $500 that i desperately need. Problem is that I'm in FL, he's in MD. The $500 cam from a bounced check h wrote me, but never paid back, so I have the proof from the bank. I know taking this t small-claims will be a waste of time and $, but is there anyway to retrieve this money without spending money?

You would have to spend about the same amount of money on court fees, which you woud in theory get back if he's found to owe it to you. However with small claims the payment is not enforced as in criminal proceedings. You would also have to spend a lot of time preparing, time you could spend earning money. And obviously the whole thing would take a long time.

"is there anyway to retrieve this money without spending money?" - Nope.

You can sue him where the payment was delivered. If he mailed you the check you could probably sue him where you live. The filing fee for small claims court is pretty small and is normally recoverable.

y contact your state's bad check unit and see if you can get any movement from him that way. just the cost of a phone call even though they may refuse to prosecute it and say it's a civil claim particularly as it is a family issue.

if you can prove that he knowing wrote you a bad check then you can have him arrested for fraud. Talk to the local DA's office in MD and see if they can help you.
