802.11n routers and adapters can speed up file and multimedia transfers between your home networked devices, whether wired or wireless, and of course it depends on the distence between the router and computers, but 802.11n also increased the range of the network.

With that said, IF you use any of the lower speed and distance adapters inside any of your network nodes, (any type of hardware network item, such as a computer, printer, game console, wireless entertainment item, etc) it will slow the entire network down to the speed of the slowest node.

So, if you currently have devices using 802.11g or b, installing an 802.11n is pointless, as you will not achieve any speed increase or distance increases.

If you are changing ALL of your nodes to the newer 802.11n protocol, then you will achieve faster speeds between devices, and range of the network.

It has nothing to do with your Internet download speeds. Only the file transfers between your networked devices, (nodes).

I once though this had something to do with my Internet speeds too, but was embarressed when I discovered it didn't. That it only pertains to my home/office networked devices. lol

It will speed up the transfer from the router to the wireless device, and also provide better signal over longer distances, but WILL NOT increase the download speed of your internet connection.
