It takes a long time for all of that water to drain away from the recharge area.

By the times it is gone the elves have been at it again !

Water seeps under ground from when it dose rain and snows and travels down hill to the lowest point. There it surfaces and forms streams and rivers. Most all rivers are formed this way. The Rio Grand is one example.

some are fed by underground springs and some are 'over-flows' from lakes and ponds.....
