and it's not the first I've seen either. where did this cliche come from? I'm American and I might not be the brightest crayon in the pack, but I'm far from dumb. And I'm not fat either, neither are many of the people I know..
it pisses me off when people bad mouth America. 9/10ths of the world would jump at a chance to come here.

You may not be fat (I'm not either), but many Americans are. That accounts for the fat part of the stereotype.
It's not that Americans are dumb, but many of us are unsophisticated travelers. We don't keep up on world affairs and frequently know little about the countries to which we travel. We don't want to bother to learn anything before we go. Then, we complain that other countries are different from home.
If a Frenchman walked into a restaurant in the U.S. and complained that menu was in English, we'd think that he was nuts. Of course, it's in English! Yet, Americans will walk into a restaurant in France and complain that the menu is in French and they can't get American dishes.
How do I know? I'm an American who has traveled extensively to foreign countries. I've seen many "dumb" Americans. I have also worked in the travel industry. I've fielded many complaints from customers who travel to foreign countries and are startled to find that they speak another language and eat different food.

Michael Moore has a lot to answer for. I'm from New Zealand so "the average Americans" I've seen have been on news clips and doco's it would seem i high percentage of Americans are fat.
