Ok so we have asked this before, but now we have many new members and I am anxious to hear their opinions. Old members feel free to answer also.

What Egyptian custom or tradition annoys you the most and why? What do you think you could do to change it?

Eman: If you are referring to the expression "knock on wood" or "touch wood" to prevent something from happening - this stems from a Pagan ritual involving trees being considered a holy diety. Actually did not originate in Egypt, but where exactly, I do not know.

I think the thing that needs most changing is the constant hassling of tourists & foreign residents.
This happens a lot, particularly in Luxor, & i have seen women in tears because it can be quite unnerving.
I love Egypt & the people, so dont get me wrong, but it drives me wild being hassled all the time & having to smile & accept it.
I have often asked my Egyptian husband if he would please explain to people that if they hassle us, then we wont buy, or ride, or whatever; But if they were to ask, then stand back & give us space, then we would buy arm loads of stuff, ride all the buggys & sail all the boats. They dont listen though, so it will never change.
I have lived in Luxor, so i do know how hard it is there with only tourism for work, & i know what its like when things go wrong in the world & all Islam is blamed, so no money is coming into Egypt.
So, if they stopped all of the hassle, everyone would want to go there, not just some of us. As it is, people just say 'no, Egypts to much hassle', which i find sad.
