You should definately go - but you'll have a completely different experience depending on where you go on the lake. If you go to south shore, expect alot of tourists, souvenir shops, and casinos. The lake is beautiful wherever you go and there's some good restaurants and a ton of fast food chains and bars.
If you go to the north shore, it will be more quaint and quiet - not too many tourists. Tahoe City on the north shore is a town of 6 or so blocks with some great shopping and decent restaurants. There's motels and house rentals there - no casinos. Kings Beach is bigger than Tahoe City and it's about 10 miles further north/east.
The West shore is almost only house rentals - there's a couple of bar/restaurants but no real town (it's close to Tahoe City though). Truckee is the main city near the north shore - about a half hour from the lake. It's great with nice shopping and great food/bars.

Have fun!!

Very beautiful, laid-back, I'd recommend it to people who love the outdoors. Hiking, camping etc etc

Gambling and food. Scenery is fine for side travel.

It's nice. Dress warm. Are you camping? If so, expect bears.

Have fun.
