They haven't. In the early years of colonization, the colonists very much adhered to their existing (English, French, Spanish, and Dutch) identities.

in the early colonial days 'people came to north america for freedom of religion(at the same time imposing their religion on others),way out of poverty(at the same time impoverishing whole nations in the process).the word colonist today needs some revision.besides they didn't create an identity ,not til about 1880 i'd say.

The colonist weren't seeking an American identity, they were seeking an opportunity to live a "new" life (that is, different than where they came).
