Texas fought for its freedom from Mexico in large part because of the American settlers that moved there.

People like Bowie and Crockett were famous examples of men that came from the US to Texas and wanted to gain the people there the freedom that they had known in the US.

There were a number of Mexicans in the area that felt betrayed and mistreated by the government of Mexico.

After winning their independence, the Texans still ended up fighting a number of battles with the Mexicans and losses mounted on both sides. That may have been a factor that contributed to their wanting to join the US.

They already had a sizable portion of citizens that had come from the US originally, then they also wanted the increased security that being a state provided.

At first the men and women Who moved there simply wanted to raise cattle and Crops and lived peacably. These people included Mexicans, Whites and escaped and emanciptaed Slaves.

The Mexican Government sold a great deal of the land to The united states (look up Gadsten Purchase) and Like all things it became politisized. The American Government had a grotesque policy when it came to indians in those days and the Mexicans in the Area blamed the whites for Stirring the Proverbial pot. Mexico Declared war on Texas (not the other way around) and Texas won it's independance from Mexico.

Much of the Annexation in those days had to do with politicians wanting more representation for their interests in Congress. Texas Did not want to be Annexed. That is Why to this day they fly the Lone star flag. It is a reminder that for about a year they were their own Country. But Texas Knew it needed The U.S. as An Ally in case Mexico Flared up Again (it did) And The Southern states were happy to annex Texas and increase what they viewed as Southern interests being represented in The US congress. Texas Was Annexed in 1845. 16 years Before the emancipation Proclamation and the onset of the Civil War.

The declaration to become a state was driven by the same groups that fought Santa Anna's forces through out this war. Most were actually Mexican rangers who had huge stakes in the possible separation from Mexico. While of course the remaining forces were those Americans that came to Texas to start their own ranges.
