The closer to the city, the higher the cost. Twenty years ago my family moved to the south US and we made more per hour than we did up north, but the cost of living was so high there was really no difference. We paid twice as much to rent (and it wasn't as nice as the place we lived before) plus we had to drive 20 miles a day in heavy traffic, so that was 2 hours out of our day, coming and going home. The availability of shopping centers, huge super markets and cultural events meant we'd obviously go out more and there was far more variety, and we ended up spending more. It all leveled-out to be about the same income after factoring in all the pluses and minuses. It just boils down to what you want. We moved back to the country because the crime rate is non existent and I can sit out on the porch even when I'm home alone and dose off peacefully, not fearing someone lurking around the corner or a neighbor watching my every move. I can't live that way. I want to know who my neighbors are and actually greet them face to face while meeting them on the gravel road with a wave and a smile!
