Another poster suggested that the US would, inevitably, have to invade Canada for resources to satisfy U.S. needs. OK, so let's accept that hypothetical. The U.S. decides to invade Canada for oil or water or something else it needs... and that Canada won't bargain for.
What would the rest of the world do? Sit back and watch it happen? Intervene? If so, to what degree and in what ways?
It's hypothetical, folks. Please, no "I don't accept your premise", because if that's your response, you don't get it and your contribution isn't helpful.

I don't think it would be a military invasion, but rather an embargo. They'll close the borders and cut them off economically. Canada sells a lot of goods to the American market.
But as to an American military invasion - I suppose it depends on who we're allies with. If we invade Canada we'd be basically declaring war on the Brits and Australians too, I guess. I'm guessing it would be bloody and ugly and the rest of the world would watch. This would be a prime time for someone like China to also attack the US and start WWIII for spite and vulnerability as much as anything else.

If our relationship with Canada got so bad that we would even think of invading, or that Canada wouldn't be interested in bargaining, then it would truly be a tragedy in the full sense of the word. I think the rest of the world's reaction would be to be shocked first, then I would expect countries like the United Kingdom and Australia to get heavily involved in stopping the nonsense.

It's not likely to EVER happen though hyopthetically speaking I'm sure it would be met with resistance unless the US dressed up as the government of Canada being comprimised by terrorists though I can't see educated Canadians falling for it and it would be met with heavy resistance which would have a heavy heavy toll on lives of both forces. It could also meet resistance from a world defense force in protection of Canada's sovereignty.

Interesting question. I doubt much would happen outside of diplomatic protests and protest marches here and abroad. The economy of the US is a major factor in the world economy and sanctioning us would be disastrous for that world economy. Declaring war on us won’t happen because the consequences would be disastrous. We would be roundly condemned by the major powers and the UN headquarters would be moved.
The Canadians would engage in insurgency actions, aided covertly by England and Australia. Occupying such a vast territory would be extremely difficult.

I guess that would depend on how far in the future that would happen and the state of the rest of the world.
I hope that some countries would intervene seeing as Canada's military "strength" is currently no where near that of the United States.

I'm sure President Cheney could find a way to justify it under the umbrella of "the war on terror" It would be tough for any kind of military action against us ,Thats interesting because even sanctions would be tough because that may hurt other countries as much if not more than us..

I do not think the world would be too happy about it. They would start to remember Hitler and his little acquisitions. First we would take Canada and then what? There are lots of countries with resources.
I can see a group of nations coming together and putting an army together to get us out of Canada. Probably in a move similiar to getting the Iraqi army out of Kuwait.

It would have to a move of last resort for the US. We have tried in the past to conquer them. What the world says or think hasn't had much effect lately. You can be sure that the Pentagon has a plan for it somewhere!

unneccesary, what we need from them, we get, through trade and cooperation.
remember they don't need a huge military budget because they exist under our blanket and yet enjoy complete autonomy.
english speaking canada is also very rational, they have already informed quebec that if they insist upon secceding from canada that the rest of the provences would apply for statehood.
shut those frenchies up real quick.
btw i am french so keep your political correctness comments to yourself.
as i read the other responses i'm laughing at their outrage.
how can satelite nations of russia or invasions by islam be justified and rationalized, but a fictional invasion of canada be so vehemently hated.
