okay, before the hatemail starts, allow me to clarify. do LZ and PF put out good music? yes. do i think they are two of the most influential bands of all time? yes. do i like them? HELL YES! but are they (or any single band) really worthy of the praise they get from die hard led-heads at the expense of every other good band of the last 30 years?

you cant sit there with a straight face and tell me there wasnt a single band since 1980 that appealed to you just a little bit. ive got more led zeppelin albums then any other single band on my computer, but that doesnt mean theyre the only thing i listen to. steven, you talk about screamo and rap-rock like its the only thing out there.

But you can also say that a lot of Pink Floyd's material is underrated too. I mean, how many people constantly talk about how wonderful Music From the Film More and Obscured By Clouds are? Not that many people. While some of their work can be considered overrated (I consider The Wall to be overrated) their whole catalog isn't.
But you have to admit that those two bands are very influential, even someone who doesn't like the bands have to admit that. Have there been wonder bands since? Yes! But alot of the more modern bands I listen to obviously draw a lot of influence from Floyd and Zeppelin. It's the fact that they reach such a wide audience that makes their music so influential.

It depends what you mean by overrated. I bet half the teenagers claiming to be Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd fans only know a couple songs in their catalogue, and rate them among the best and call that stuff their favorite before listening to any of their other works. Is that overrated? Probably. But I think it's more ignorance than anything. It kinda makes me uneasy when people say Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are the best, even though they're among my favorites, but it's only when they list those common songs (esp. the ones with some "super good" solo) like "Stairway to Heaven" or "Comfortably Numb". To be honest, it's not them, it's the few popular songs they have.

And I thought the 80's were a pretty bad decade for music at first, but some bands were brilliant in my opinion. R.E.M., Iron Maiden, Metallica, Dream Theater, etc.

They're both great bands, but just the tip of the iceberg in my opinion. I joined a retro-rock band when i was 17(God, 16 years ago...), and I loved both bands. The other guys in the band both had huge(and I mean HUGE) record collections. I then started to discover all of the stuff that wasn't so well known from the same era as Zep and Floyd. Doesn't mean it was any less worthy of attention, but these bands just didn't have the same kind of money behind them. For example "Free Your Mind And Your *** Will Follow" by Funkadelic, "Easter Everywhere" by The 13th Floor Elevators, and "Outside Inside" by Blue Cheer are all just as good...they just haven't been played enough by the right people.

I love both and have done so for nearly 30yrs.
Zeppelin i thought were scraping the barrel a bit in there last
2 albums with a few exceptions but as a life long fan i've got
them both.
Surprisingly i listen to Floyd more now than i did 20 years ago
it strikes more resonance with me at this point in my life.
They have definately been the soundtrack of youth.
I cherish both bands and my life would have been a lot duller
without them.
Now for the contentious issue of overrated bands i think the
likes of the kaiser chiefs, arctic monkeys etc are very overrated.

I think both bands are of the most influential and powerful ever. No way they are overrated as a band, maybe some of their work might be, but in perspective they are both great.
but there are other also very influential bands throughout the years. as I often say in other answers... finally it all comes down to personal taste, personal emotions, the way a song makes us feel. That's why for a person the best song might be a Sex Pistol song and I might say I'd rather listen to military marches instead... and I might say Pink Floyd transports me to my inner outer universe without taking any drugs and somebody else hates it...
Art is subjective when made and when appraised. But as long as we keep on consuming it , they are here to stay.

Excuse me, but there have been many bands that have appealed to me, and the only ones I can think of that could possibly equal or maybe even surpass Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are the Beatles, the Who, and the Rolling Stones. All the other acts are chopped liver in comparison!

there are a couple of stand out groups in the last 30 years but none that even come close the that way that zeppelin or pink Floyd have touched its fans and inspired other groups .So overrated not if you look at their body of work and how it still lives on today. you could say the same thing about the Beetles i personally do not care for their music but they have that kinda influence

Pink Floyd above all. I don't think Led Zeppelin that much

I mean rock n' roll doesn't need them. Where are the bands that are influenced by PF. Where are their songs about love, being young, reckless, about life being fun?. Can you put a PF song in a party?... They just gave punk a reason to came along (and fast).

Their music is just instrummental nonsense, only packaged in a spectacular presentation: big screens. huge wall of sounds, big arenas, etc. Who cares?
