Leave at 3 a.m. The 16 month old will be sleeping. Bring along lots of cheerios and snacks for him or her. Make some stops along with way. The best thing you can do is leave at 3 a.m. and you will have about 5 hours into the trip before the kid wakes up. Then get a breakfast. Play a little and get back on the road.

Don't travel alone with the child if you can take another adult along. Keep in mind you and your child may be on two different sleep schedules, so you don't want the child to get into anything, wandering off, etc. Expect to spend the night in a hotel at least one night and take extra clothes along. Make the trip interesting, and take books along for the child to look at, even if just picture books. And stop often so the child can stretch for about 5 or 10 minutes each hour.
Make sure you have a cell phone, maps, and your vehicle is roadworthy to make such a trip. Check tire pressures, treadwear, etc. Make sure all fluid levels are up to par, and keep in contact with those at your destinations regularly to inform them of your whereabouts.
And whenever possible, avoid driving through large cities during rush hour....7-9 am and 4:30-6:30 pm.
Have a safe- and fun-filled trip!
Buckle up...it's the law.
