Sometimes they do. When there are big bush fires they light smaller ones just outside of the area so as to destroy the path for the main fire, thus containing it.

They do, but that only works for areas like fields or forests. They way it works is the fire is controlled by the Firefighters. The opposing fire will run out when it no longer has fuel. They cannot do this in suburban areas, or homes,because there is no way to control that burn.

They use that with forest fires. Controlled burns are very effective at fighting fires.
