Intelligent folks do not "hold to conspiracy theories". Paranoid folks do.
Now, we could ask the valid question why so many people especially in the US are borderline paranoid. I don't know. Could be the fast food for all we know. Or the sad state of the education system. Or the gene pool... because of its history the US has a very different genetic make-up from the rest of the world. Or all of the above and then some (my best guess).

Its like anything else that goes on with any government,, They tend to lie to its people and you will find this especially true in the mideast parts,, The peoples just dont trust their governments, thats why they have dictatorship and so forth, there is not that many people out there that thinks that the USA has not landed on the moon, just the small percentage are the loudest because they want to cause hate and discontent around the world due to themselves being unable to believe in themselves,, The moon landing were in fact real and i watched all the apollo misions launch and land on the moon and return to earth with the exeption of apollo 13, Oh and did i mention that i live in the united states of america,

I think that most of them don't actually care. It's just a form of rebellion, which is what most insecure people do one way or another, or a way to seem smarter by using "reasons" to doubt accepted beliefs.
Trouble is, they don't realise that they've chosen the one on which there is no serious debate in the world. Global warming would suit them much better, because it's more subjective. I'll hide in my nuclear bunker now.

the primary reason is a misunderstanding regarding the van allen belt.
they suppose that the radiation would be unsurvivable provided the shielding that was provided.
they fail to recognize that it is not the kind of radiation that we are most familiar with. the radiation is limited to the particles that carry it and to protect against the particles is all that is required.
if this amount of radiation were present, absent the particles they would be right. but then it would not be caught up in an orbit and there would be no such belt.

Because people think that 'how could we do it back then and not now'. Well we all know the reason is money and the fact that robots can do more than humans. But people today still think that we don't have the technology to go to the moon.

a recent poll showed only 17% of people in the USA believed their elected officials were telling them the truth.
NASA is a gov't agency.
While doubting the moon landings is a BIT odd... I guess its no odder than listening to the speeches of the politicians running for president and knowing they are all lying.

1. They were born after the landings so they didn't get to see it for themselves.
2. They're used to computer graphics and other special effects that can fake just about anything.
3. It makes them feel better about themselves to think they're so much smarter than those of us who have been "fooled."

This sort of thing keeps our minds off of how the government and the rich and the powerful control our lives for their own nefarious ends.
