Republican. I am optimistic only if we build the fence and begin kicking out the illegal aliens. Otherwise, as the years go by the illegals will eventually drive all the law abiding citizens out of California, New Mexico, Arizona and some parts of Texas. In Chicago, I already personally know 3 families that have left Arizona and moved to Chicago to get away from Spanish speaking schools, crime, and the illegals in general.

Having dived head-first into my sixties, I have reminisced on this subject.
It seems to me, if you listen to the news and all the screaming sensationalism, you'll spend your life worrying about the NEXT looming catastrophe.
NOT worth it. We elect officials to do the worrying for us. Let THEM have the heart attacks. We pay them well enough to unburden ourselves from the stress.
That said, DO pay attention so you will be informed and have a good idea how to cast your vote.
My current worry is related to the "peace talks" currently being pursued at Annapolis.
I would rather see a defeat of terrorism with NO compromise than see a settlement that permits the continuation of evil in this world. A safe future depends on it. Anything less sets us up for disaster. Possibly even a "Great Tribulation" and Armageddon, as I understand Biblical prophesy.

Independent, Goldwater Conservative, who has been "forced into hard conservatism", by the Liberal B.S. Scatology !!!!!!

In a pleasant stream of flowing water, a granite boulder, appears to be a 'forever' structure/ object.
NOT SO, for how did that boulder get into the middle of such a pleasant stream, to start with??
There are always strong forces, that sooner or later, will 'rear their ugly heads', and sweep away, even the most ardently massive item.
Such, as in the above referenced condition, is the force of todays "Political Flood", an overwhelmingly powerful force, which will, sooner or later, sweep away our 'individual rights and freedoms' !!
I fear that the time of the flood, is upon us, now !!!

The spirit that made America great is still alive and well, and I think that no matter what the problems are, that spirit will reassert itself, and we will come together as a people.
We have a can-do attitude, and no matter how difficult the situation, we believe that we can fix it. It really doesn't matter if it is our situation or someone elses, we will dive in and we will make it better.
This is the American way. We have proven it over and over again, and we still are.
This is why we are in Iraq, if you cut through all the rhetoric, and get to the basic reason, it is because we believe that we can make it better.
Then, of course, like any opinionated family, we will fight among ourselves about the way any of our efforts to help are handled.

I am a conservative.

Sorry to say I am not at all optomistic, and it has little to do with politics. The USA is in decline and I see nothing preventing that decline at this point. Keeping conservatives in power may slow down the decline, but preventing it will take a major change in attitude that I just don't see happening.

Yes. The political environment has always been cyclical. That's the beauty of our system. It will correct itself. So they future I think will turn around as long as we pay attention to the hear and now.

I am American. I have voted Rep though now I agree more with what the Dem's have to offer.
