Ideology: To form a united voice to sway the progress of this great nation, and a platform upon which to focus this voice.

Actuality: To divide this nation on petty issues instead of focusing on the real problems.

Self-interest is the only purpose served by political parties.

After self-interest has been adequately accounted for, then the politicians have a PARTY!

the purposes of political parties is to win elections and dominate the government with their views. we're studying this now in school...

Vee has it right. And if we had several parties, with one candidate winning office with well under 50% of the vote, we have worse gridlock than ever and probably chaos.
