the two cams have to be aligned with the VTEC sprockets and the crank. Its not easy to explain here. I can't attach a picture to this reply. If you want the scans of the service manual on where the marks are for the chains then click on the icon for my name next to this answer and select "email". Send me your email address and I'll send the scans to you.

hope that helps

i'm gonna give you a really basic alignment to get you to top dead center on the #1 cyl assuming that is what you are looking for... start off by aligning the crank pully timing mark assuming you have the cover off there should be a dot to align the sprocket to there will be a line or an arrow on the sprocket that goes to the dot. that gets you to tdc#1 cyl on the lower end. now for the upper (cams) there are two - style lines on the cam sprockets also a dot on the exhaust and a arrow on the intake.. line up the two - lines so they look like this - - so as you look at the center of the two sprockets you will see them next to each other.

*i have excluded anything about the tentioner all i have told you is how to get them aligned, you may cause dammage to the engine (valves ect) if you don't know what you are doing, rotate the engine over by hand if you feel any resistance with the spark plugs removed. if you are not comfortable with doing this repair i do not recomend you doing it, paying some one to replace the chain/cam is going to be way cheaper than paying for the head gasket and valve job that will be needed if you start this engine and you have not set it up correctly*
