everything needs water to survive---but I think the reason why the hippo stays in water so much is to stay cool

The word "hippopotamus" come from the Greek for "river horse". Of course, it need water. It drinks it; it feeds there; it lets the water support its weight.

They need it to keep cool -- and for many of their 'social' issues. They will not stay out of the water for very long, just for feeding -- or chasing off unwanted males.
