Tell your cousin to stay off your computer if he is not going to help you fix it.

Well if you dont have the XP install and is a legal retail cop (if OEM Im NOT sure) you can call microsoft and ask for a disk replacement, you may not have to buy another XP Disk. When you have the disk you can use the recovery console to fix it. You can also invest in something like norton Ghost and norton utilities. With norton ghost you can make a backup copy of a fresh installed OS and with utilities you can make sure that the system runs fine, also it will include an antivirus wich appear is something you desperatley need. And yes you should save all data that is on the computer and turn off your system, even if is turned on you will neve know if its going to crash anytime soon. Also the problem may not appear again

Probably going to need to reinstall Windows. Usually, once something nasty is onboard, it is hard to get rid of.

In the future, set up a password protected administrative account...

and a standard user account for people like your cousin. Then they won't be able to install downloaded programs, and any bugs that arrive in song downloads or whatever will have a tougher time finding their way into the system files.

Wow ----- this could be a lot of things ----- next time anybody wants to use your computer --log them in on a "guest account" --- don"t let them get on as a "administrator"--with power to make changes .
I learned my lesson the hard way too ---- I let a "computer tech",supposed to have been smart --- use my computer one time to do a job search, for a job in the computer field -ha!
She completely did some real stupid things and it took me a hour to straighten up my things .
No more ! No one uses my computer(s) anymore except if I"m doing it ,or they use the "guest account"-- no exceptions!
Try while booting up to hit F1 key and check out the boot-up order --- time & date /zone correct?----
It can be many things ~~~~~~.

Good advice from Brandon M. Also make sure you have a good anti-virus, and keep it up to date. If you have a high speed connection, get a firewall too.

Your cousin doesn't seem to respect your property. If it were me, he wouldn't be using my computer any more. You can also use the password function in XP. You would then be required to enter your username & password to access the desktop.
